OUR MISSION
Richtungswechsel (Change of direction) means social responsibility
Through our commitment to the social (re)integration of incarcerated individuals in the penal system, we aim to break the cycle of recidivism and unlock potential. Richtungswechsel represents a change in how our society views prisons and incarcerated individuals, with the goal of developing social responsibility. Simultaneously, we seek to promote the professional excellence of prison officers and other professionals in the penal system through knowledge exchange and further education on an international level.

THE CHALLENGE
In Austria, nearly one in three adults reoffends after release from prison. For juveniles, this rate rises to more than half of those who are released. Our prison system fails to achieve its primary goal of rehabilitation, and our society fails to take responsibility for the lack of support we offer to the currently and formerly incarcerated.
Based on extensive research and personal experience, we are convinced that these recurrences can be prevented.
We are tackling this challenge.
WHAT WE DO
Richtungswechsel offers change on multiple levels.
Our EU projects offer a unique opportunity to collaborate with other organisations committed to justice and rehabilitation, sharing best practices. At the same time, through EU funding, we can implement projects in Austria and beyond that promote growth in our penal system.
We believe in emphasising evidence-based, best practices. There are successful examples worldwide that demonstrate the positive changes that justice systems and its professional staff can achieve. At the same time, there are external organisations and NGOs that promote support for the currently and formerly incarcerated through their initiatives.
