This episode is in German.

In the very first episode of Inside-Out, Tamara Höfer, founder of Richtungswechsel and former prison officer in England, sits down with co-host Ben, an Austrian lawyer, to discuss her extraordinary journey in the correctional system.

Tamara was part of the prestigious Unlocked Graduates Program in the UK, which places university graduates as prison officers in correctional institutions. For two years, she worked in the system while completing a Master’s degree in Leadership and Custodial Environments. She gained a deep understanding of the system from both the perspective of incarcerated people and correctional staff.

She shares transformative experiences from her time in the correctional system, the challenges of the profession, and why a Richtungswechsel (change of direction) is needed – in society, politics, and especially within the system itself.

Together with Ben, Tamara discusses the founding of Richtungswechsel, the NGO’s current projects, and her vision for a more humane and effective process of reintegration – in Austria and internationally.

She also addresses the tense situation in the Austrian correctional system: staffing shortages, overwork, and the urgent need to think more creatively about the labor market. Without programs like Unlocked, Tamara would never have become a prison officer.
